TopDOS v3.01u
TopDOS is a Powerful easy to use DOS interface which adds new commands. For
the novice, the TREE command makes hard disk management a snap. Copy, Delete,
move, or Execute files with a keystroke! For the expert, TopDOS adds a host
of useful extensions to DOS. The command line can be edited like a line in
your word processor, and the file editor makes EDLIN obsolete. All the
commonly used DOS commands have been enhanced, and many new commands added.
A help screen for all DOS and TopDOS commands is available at the command line.
You can even create your own custom DOS commands to meet your specific needs.
Powerful keyboard macro and alias capabilities provide a command language for
automating processing and can eliminate the need for batch files.
Once you've used TopDOS, you wont want to use DOS without it!
TO RUN A DEMONSTRATION OF TopDOS
Type TOPSDEMO at the DOS prompt of the drive containing the TopDOS diskette.
We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you run the demonstration. It takes only 10 minutes
to run and will explain the features of TopDOS faster than any other method.
TO START TopDOS
Type TOPDOS at the DOS prompt of the drive containing the TopDOS diskette.
TopDOS WILL RUN FROM A FLOPPY DISK for those who don't have a hard drive.
TO INSTALL TopDOS ON A HARD DRIVE (Automatic Version)
Type INSTALL then press the return key at the DOS prompt of the drive
containing the TopDOS diskette, then just follow the instructions. No files
will be changed unless you choose to change them.
TO INSTALL TopDOS ON A HARD DRIVE (Do-it-Yourself version)
Make a directory on your hard drive called TOPDOS (or the directory you want)
Add the following lines to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
PATH=C:\TOPDOS;........(or substitute the path you used above) Tells TopDOS
where to look for its files from anywhere in your system.
SET THELPATH=C:\TOPDOS This tells TopDOS where to look for the help files.
TOPDOS TOPDOS.KEY......Tells the system to start TopDOS when you start your
computer and loads the MACRO file.
Print this file by pressing ALT-P so you can save the lines above for reference.
Copy all the files on the TopDOS diskette to your new TOPDOS directory.
If you didn't understand most of the above, we recommend that you use the
automatic installation method.
TIPS FOR USING TOPDOS
TopDOS is intuitive in almost every aspect of its use, and therefore very easy
to learn. It is designed so that you hardly know it is running, unless you
decide to use the powerful features it contains.
There are a few things you should know to help you learn TopDOS quickly:
1. You will get a context sensitive help response whenever you press F1.
2. If you need help with any DOS or TopDOS command from the command line,
just type the name of the command and press F1.
3. If you can't remember the name of a command, type COMMANDS, press F1,
and a list of available commands will be displayed.
4. If you need help with the command line editor, press F1 at an empty
DOS prompt.
5. Be certain to run the TopDOS demonstration. Type TOPSDEMO from the
directory containing the TopDOS files.
6. Try out the TREE, EDIT, and ALIAS commands. Could change your life!
7. Look at the file SAMPLE.AKA. It has a list of sample aliases which
you can study, use, or copy. Type EDIT SAMPLE.AKA from the TopDOS
